In Islam, death is seen as a transition from this life to the next. The funeral and burial process follows specific religious guidelines to honor the deceased and seek Allah’s mercy. The process is simple, dignified, and follows the teachings of the Quran and Sunnah.
The Importance of Preparing for Death
Muslims are encouraged to always be mindful of death and prepare for it by living a righteous life. When a Muslim nears death, family and loved ones recite the Shahada (La ilaha illa Allah, Muhammadur Rasulullah – There is no god but Allah, and Muhammad is His Messenger) to help the departing soul leave in a state of faith.
The Bereavement Service will explain the registration process.
If you wish to start making arrangements, they will guide you while ensuring all legal requirements are met.

Engage a funeral director as early as possible when death is expected. If you do not have one, reach out to your local mosque, and they will provide you with the necessary contact details. The funeral director will coordinate with the council to arrange the burial location and time. They will also collect the body from the hospital, which requires the green certificate for burial.
If the patient in the hospital, consultant will issue the Medical Certificate of Cause of Death (MCCD), it is sent directly to the Medical Examiner (ME). ME sends it to the Register Office. The Bereavement Service will need the name, phone number, and email address of the relative responsible for registration.
After checking the MCCD, the Register Office will send an automated email to the named relative. This email will contain instructions on booking an appointment to register the death. Once booked, a confirmation email will be sent with a pre-registration form attached. If no email address was provided, the appointment can still be booked by calling 01908 372 101.
Once the death is registered in person, the Registrar will issue: 1. Formal Death Certificate Charged at £12.50 per copy. The number of copies needed depends on estate matters (banks, insurance, probate, etc.). 2. Green Certificate for Burial or Cremation Sent directly to the chosen Funeral Directors. Required before the deceased can be moved from the hospital.
